Why do you as a parent need to get your child to have an eye examination ?

The eye is merely an end organ that receives the images and translates the information as an electric signal which is propagated via the optic nerve to the so called occipital cortex ( the visual centre) that lies at the very back of the brain. The visual centre develops in response to good imaging by the eye and effective conduction of the signals to it. The visual system hence is driven by one important parameter which is the ability of the eye to form clear well focussed images, the absence of which will result in subnormal development . The subnormal development leads to a condition called Amblyopia . This condition can be reversed provided remedial steps are undertaken as soon as possible. It is needless to say that earlier the condition is diagnosed the easier it is to reverse it . Quite often in India due to lack of well designed protocols for time point related eye checks older children are brought to eye clinics with dense amblyopia . Under these circumstances, treatment can get very challenging and frustrating for both the treating doctors and their young patients not forgetting the parental anxiety . The incidence of Amblyopia is about 3 % in our population ie 3 out of 100 kids will have this condition.

It is imperative that you get your child examined on a regular basis during the formative years beginning from the age of 2 years to 8 years. It is mandatory to get the child examined earlier should there be a history of any serious eye problem in family .
